How to Use Vu's Maths Hub for HSC Extension 1 and 2 Exam Prep

Vu's Maths Hub (vumaths.com) is a free online library of HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Extension 2 booklets, worked examples, exam techniques, and focused practice you can read in your browser. No account or download required.

This post explains which booklets to use, how they fit together, and how to get the most out of them before your exams. The full guide also lives on the main site: How to Use Vu's Maths Hub.

What these booklets are for

These booklets are written for Extension 1 and Extension 2 exam preparation and review. They distil worked examples, common exam techniques, and focused practice.

They are not intended to replace your textbooks or classroom notes.

Use them as a rigorous revision companion:

  • Strengthen weak topics with targeted examples
  • Practise exam-style questions with full solutions
  • Return to your textbook or teacher when you need fuller theory or syllabus breadth

Can you read the booklets in any order?

Yes. Each topic booklet is designed to stand on its own. Read them in whatever order matches what you are revising this week.

  • Booklets are linked where topics connect, but nothing locks you into a fixed pathway
  • Jump to trigonometry today, mechanics next week, probability the week after
  • Come back to your textbook whenever you need more context

Quick start (5 steps)

  1. Go to vumaths.com and open any booklet from the homepage
  2. Pick booklets that match your course, Extension 1, Extension 2, or both
  3. Read topics in any order that suits your study plan
  4. Follow the suggested prerequisites below when they help (e.g. Differential Equations before Mechanics)
  5. Move to challenge booklets when you are ready for harder, mixed-topic practice

Extension 1 booklets

These align primarily with HSC Mathematics Extension 1. Several also support Extension 2 or shared Advanced content.

HSC SequencesArithmetic and geometric series, sigma notation, recurrence relationsRead booklet
HSC TrigonometryIdentities, equations, graphs, inverse trigRead booklet
HSC CombinatoricsCounting, permutations, combinationsRead booklet
HSC Differential EquationsBasic DE for Ext 1; groundwork for Ext 2 Mechanics, read before MechanicsRead booklet
HSC FunctionsCombined function topics for Ext 1 and 2, follow the chapter order inside the bookletRead booklet
HSC DistributionsDiscrete and continuous probability distributionsRead booklet
HSC Polys Ext 1Real-number polynomials, factorisation, graphsRead booklet
HSC ProbabilityConditional probability, independence, exam-style questionsRead booklet

Extension 2 booklets

These target Extension 2 syllabus depth. Extension 1 students may still find Proofs and Induction useful for enrichment.

BookletWhat it coversOpen on Vu's Maths Hub
HSC ProofsProof structure and strategies, mostly Ext 2; Ext 1 students may find helpfulRead booklet
HSC PolynomialsAlgebra, roots, complex-number connections,  Ext 2 syllabusRead booklet
HSC InductionMathematical induction - mostly Ext 2; Ext 1 students may find helpfulRead booklet
HSC InequalitiesClassic inequality techniques and resultsRead booklet
HSC Complex NumbersAlgebra, geometry, modulus–argument formRead booklet
HSC IntegralsAdvanced calculus and integration - mostly Ext 2; also useful for Ext 1 integralsRead booklet
HSC MechanicsVectors, motion, forces, modelling - read Differential Equations firstRead booklet
HSC VectorsLines, planes, dot and cross products, 3D geometryRead booklet

Challenge and mixed-topic booklets

Once you are comfortable with individual topics, use these for harder, exam-style practice across the course.

HSC Last ResortsInvestigation-level Ext 2 problems at high difficulty, best for practising Question 16-style questionsRead booklet

Suggested study tips

  • Differential Equations before Mechanics, Read HSC Differential Equations before HSC Mechanics. The DE booklet covers basics for Extension 1 and the modelling ideas Mechanics builds on.

  • Functions chapter order - When you start HSC Functions, follow the sequence of sections inside the booklet. Topics there span both Extension 1 and 2 and build on each other.

  • Question 16 practice - Use HSC Last Resorts when you want investigation-level Extension 2 problems at the difficulty of a typical HSC Question 16.

  • Mixed revision - HSC Collections is a strong mid-to-late-year pick when you want hard problems drawn across several topics.
